We asked the producers who created the danceable beat and innovative sound, which was new to Nanase Aikawa, about REBORN and Nanase Aikawa.

Sound Producer

GEE

■Please tell us about the sound concepts.
The sound concept is nothing but the harmony of Rock and Electro.
It is the latest genre which the world is moving towards. I believe it is perfect for the concept of Nanase’s work since it is the latest sound with some aspects of NEWWAVE and punk, which could be popular in Japan’s near future.
■How do you get the idea for the sounds?
I listen to the latest sounds. House, techno, electro, rock etcetera. I try to study all the latest sounds of the world whenever I have time, then think how I could adopt that into Japanese music. I also do DJ work myself and experiment on the floor.
■Which is the most memorable song to you? Any reasons for that?
All of them are memorable, especially “yumemiru”. Since it is the re-mix of the mega-hit, it was one trial and error after another. I’m emotionally attached to that.
■What do you think of Nanase Aikawa from your point of view?
She’s the forever-Girl-Rock Star! A very powerful lady. But, in private, she is very attentive to any details and is a super kind person.

Sound Producer

Heigo Tani (Wall Five / Co-Fusion)

■You made a spectacular showing in arranging and programming this time. Would you tell us the theme of REBORN?
I gathered in the latest dance music and new tones which have rhythm as a core. I also added some work and played with her vocal. That would be the point.
■What was the most trouble in this album?
Though it took time modulating balance and details of the vocals, I don’t remember any difficulty this time since I enjoyed it “freely” this time.
■What were you being careful about when you created the sounds?
The balance of vocal and rhythm, since it is dance music. I paid extra attention to let the song out as well as to put rhythm and groove in other sounds.
■What is the most memorable song to you? Any reasons for that?
It would be “I love my way”. As a personal opinion, I believe we created a variation of new sound of Aikawa.
■What do you think of Nanase Aikawa from your point of view?
An amazing power from that little tiny slender body!
I’m always overwhelmed at her concerts and recordings.
She’s super cool!

Recording Director

Naoya Osada

■What is the main sound of REBORN?
I asked SPACEWALKERS, Higo Tani and GEE, to work most of the sound work for the first time. At my first impression, I felt the energy change the atmosphere as soon as I heard the sound. I hope you can feel bodily sensations of the new Aikawa sound like “Yumemiru..”, re-born of “Yumemiru Shoujyo”, “I love my way” by JUON the FUZZY CONTROL and more.
■Did you have any difficulties in recordings?
At the beginning, I was puzzled to take songs away from the clearly-defined rhythmical sound, since her songs always have been strong rock pieces or ballad before. However, I’m used to it now and it broadened my field.
■Do you have any secret stories about the recordings?
As I’m in charge of the song direction; her songs depend on the sounds and voices which are heard from the headphones. If they are organized, her songs get a nice beat. I paid the best attention to make good sounds for her. Well, the real secret stories are something that I can’t share here. But, her first son appeared at the studio very often, and commented “That was good!” like a real producer. He’s cute!
■What was the most time-consuming work?
The “massage” I gave her before singing? I’m only joking! Preparation is the most time-consuming work. Selecting songs, putting lyrics, making temporary songs. We did that again and again until we were satisfied. Even if the words of the lyrics sounded good, it would turn out to be in a bad beat when sung. I asked to work with details of the melodies sometimes. I value a sense of unity between words and melody.
■What is the most memorable song to you? Any reasons for that?
“PRISM” would be it. It has already been distributed to mobile phones. It was the start of creating a new Aikawa sound. Quite simply, I was impressed with the combined effect of lyrics, melody and arrangement. It is exactly the feeling of “Art is explosion!” by Taro Okamoto. (Do you understand?)
■How did you meet Nanase Aikawa?
I met her in her 10s when she was still commuting from Osaka. Mr. Tetsuro Oda introduced her to me at the studio in Futagotamagawa. I’d heard about her before, yet I remember she had a stronger power in her eyes than I expected. I asked her “What do you want to be from here?”, and she gave a confident answer, “I want to be famous”. That was a very memorable scene.
■What do you think of Nanase Aikawa from your point of view?
She’s got a very strong power of exert centripetal force sort of, which attracts people. That is a consistent way of being an artist, thinking, and making her voice. There is no leeway in her recording since she always thinks about every single person who comes to her concert. Her figure is a masterpiece. I hope she continues keeping her keen sense and leading the listeners’ hearts from this moment on.

■What is the sales angle of REBORN?
It is a collection of music pieces with the keyword of “Danceable rock”. It is full of excitement!
■Are there any secret stories behind the making of the album?
At the recording, Nanase asked her manager to do choral singing all of a sudden. That recording was carried under Nanase Aikawa’s direction.
■What is the most memorable song to you? Any reason for that?
Not surprisingly, “Yumemiru..” which had been revived in a different form after 13 years. Since the original version has a strong impression, we had a hard time arranging the song, the whole lyrics, and arrangement itself. Yet, in the end, we are quite pleased with the work.
■What do you think of Nanase Aikawa?
A reliable sister.
